Cheat Sheets: Functions of Would

Life's Not Fair; Neither is English.

'I would like a hamburger.'  

'I would eat hamburgers every day when I was in university.' 

'I would eat a hamburger if I weren't on a diet.'

'I would eat a hamburger with you.'

Three of these 'would' sentences are correct, and one is incorrect.  Additionally, each of these 'would' sentences represent a different function and meaning of the modal 'would'.  English isn't fair sometimes.  Let us help you solve the 'would' puzzle.
